Coal Tourism Starts in India

Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) and Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) have started a first-of-sorts coal tourism to raise awareness about the importance of coal mining. Under the five-year agreement signed between the two sides, tourists will be taken inside Saoner Underground Mine No. 1, located 35 km from Nagpur city. A unique man-riding system (used in mines) will take tourists inside and a WCL guide will facilitate this trip, taking them about 100 m under the surface. Entry to the mine will also be subject to health and fitness parameters set by WCL. For instance, children below 18 years will not be allowed inside the underground mine. The day tour will start at 9.30 am from the MTDC officer in Nagpur. It will cost Rs.650 and will include transportation charges, safety gear given at the start of mine tour, and lunch at the WCL guesthouse. The underground mine tour may remain closed during the rainy season (from June to September) due to water accumulation.
