FISH-LADDERS

 Water Resources Minister informed that government is planning to create “fish ladders” in Ganga near to farrake barrage to help Hilsa travel upstream to improve the catch.
 Hilsa is born in fresh water, spends most of its life in sea and returns to fresh water to spawn.

 Hilsa is migrating fish which moves upstream from June-November and then again from January – April.
 It travels a distance of 1200-1400 km and is a long swimmer and travels as high as UP (during British times).

ROLE OF FARRAKKE BARRAGE

 Commissioning of farrakke barrage in Bengal intercepted journey of hilsa.
 It could no longer move beyond West Bengal.
 CFRI (Central Fisheries Research Institute) confirms that rarely is Hilsa seen in Patna and never seen in Ahmedabad for decades.
 Due to this there is heavy congregation of fish below the barrage and are indiscriminately caught even before they breed.

FISH LADDER

 Also called as fishway as essential structure that allow a migratory passage to fish around dams, culverts or waterfalls.
 Fishways give anadromous fish whose survival depends upon migration – a deter can be critical in keeping up fish stocks.
 Fish ladders depend upon obstruction, river flow & species of affected fish.
 Help in over-rising against the stream.
